Ataxia is a disorder often characterized by degeneration of the cerebellum, brain stem and spinal cord. Ataxia can appear in the hereditary or sporadic form, both of which are debilitating and possibly fatal.
Early symptoms may include clumsiness and loss of coordination, while, in later stages, balance and speech can be severly impaired.
Ataxia is poorly understood and difficult to diagnose, often resulting in victims receiving delayed or inadequate treatment. Ataxia's effects are also compounded because there is no known cure.
In an effort to speed early recognition of Ataxia's symptoms by parents and health care professionals, and to highlight the need for further research, support groups designate a day in September for an awareness campaign.
I urge all Texans to recognize the seriousness of Ataxia, to lend support to those affected and their loved ones, and commend the medical progessionals who provide such invaluable care. By recognizing and supporting their efforts, we can help to ensure a brighter future for those impacted by this condition. Let us begin today to make a difference.
Therefore, I, Rick Perry, Governor of Texas, do hereby proclaim September 25, 2009,
Ataxia Awareness Day
in Texas, and urge the appropriate recognition whereof.
In official recognition whereof, I hereby affix my signature this 10th day of August, 2009.
Rick Perry
Governor of Texas
