Ataxia is a disorder often characterized by degeneration of the cerebellum, brain stem and spinal cord. It can appear in the hereditary or sporadic form, either of which can be debilitating and possibly fatal.
Early symptoms may include loss of balance and coordination, while, in later stages, speech and swallowing can be severely impaired.
Ataxia is poorly understood and difficult to diagnose, often resulting in delayed or inadequate treatment. There is no known cure.
In an effort to speed early recognition of ataxia symptoms by parents and health care professionals, and to highlight the need for further research, support groups designate a day in September for an awareness campaign.
I urge all Texans to recognize the seriousness of ataxia, lend support to ataxia patients and their loved ones, and commend the medical professions who provide such invaluable care. By recognizing and support their efforts, we can help to ensure a brighter future for those touched by this condition. Let us begin today to make a difference.
Therefore, I, Rick Perry, Governor of Texas, do hereby proclaim September 25, 2011, to be
Ataxia Awareness Day
in Texas, and urge the appropriate recognition whereof.
In official recognition whereof, I hereby affix my signature this 24th day of August, 2011.
Rick Perry
Governor of Texas
